“I always watched it when I was young and wondered why the story never made any sense,” says Nahat, who as a child was a familiar with Hoffmann’s story. Ballet San Jose program notes for The Nutcracker point out that Hoffmann’s story was an allegory criticizing the government, but its political overtones were sugarcoated, so to speak. In Nahat’s version, for instance, the character often known as the Sugar Plum Fairy is the Tsarina. Though his version is mindful of Hoffmann’s intentions, at the same time, Nahat says he deliberately dispensed with the almost sinister, mad-scientist quality often associated with Drosselmeyer, the godfather who gives Maria the nutcracker, and gave him a more benevolent presence, reflecting the piece’s light-hearted theme. “I wanted to bring out happiness the season offers in family life,” Nahat says.

Kumar has been a part of the event since its inception. Growing attendance, from 200 at Redwood Middle School to more than 1,000, prompted a move to a bigger venue. During the festivities, participants will see two dances. Dandia involves sticks, a partner and fast-paced music, and is what many people gravitate toward as it’s easy to pick up. The other is called Garba, a dance with the hands, which Kumar says requires more finesse and is an opportunity to show individual skill. “The networking that happens is amazing,” Kumar said. “The colors of the traditional dresses are spellbinding. Everyone present that evening gets to be part of the show, dancing and singing along with the music, in an absolute zone. And when they want a break, we have the delicious food available for purchase.”.

Here are some of our top concert picks. Seger has said this is his final tour. And we believe he — unlike some other acts that make similar claims — means it. We were fortunate enough to see the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and his mighty Silver Bullet Band earlier this month and can testify that they are sounding great on this tour.
