Firefighters were called to the three-story building in the 3100 block of King Street at 9:01 a.m. on reports of a fire with residents trapped inside a top floor apartment, Berkeley fire Deputy Chief Avery Webb said. Before firefighters arrived, a woman fell while possibly trying to jump from the burning apartment into a nearby tree, Webb said. She was taken to a hospital trauma center. Her condition was not known. Fire crews extinguished the blaze at 9:16 a.m., and rescued another woman still inside the apartment, Webb said. The fire, which burned in the apartment’s hallway, did not spread to other units.
